Neither country held a public referendum on this decision in the true spirit of rule by the managerial class.

"They will likely come to regret their decision at a later date..."

And there's the rub. No doubt the peoples of Sweden and Finland will come to feel bitter regret, but their political elites - which do not in any way represent the people - will profit greatly. And, as they feel no loyalty whatever to the nations they control, in case of trouble they can simple decamp with their ill-gotten gains to the USA or elsewhere.

"Ill-gotten gains"? Oh yes. That is why they have been "strongly pro-US" for so long. Money is very persuasive, and the USA simply sprays money around to everyone who obeys it. Future historians, if any, will focus on the USA's "exorbitant privilege" of printing dollars without any concern for inflation, after Washington managed to make the dollar the world's reserve currency.
